August 31st, 2010
The Debian Project has lost a member of its community. Frans Pop (fjp) died on August 20th.
Frans was involved in Debian as a maintainer of several packages, a supporter of the S/390 port, and one of the most involved members of the Debian Installer team. He was a Debian Listmaster, editor and release manager of the Installation Guide and the release notes, as well as a Dutch translator.
The Debian Project honours his good work and strong dedication to Debian and Free Software. Frans’ broad technical knowledge and his ability to share that knowledge with others will be missed. The contributions of Frans will not be forgotten, and the high standards of his work will continue to serve as an inspiration to others.
About Debian
The Debian Project is an association of Free Software developers who volunteer their time and effort in order to produce the completely free operating systems Debian GNU/Linux.

DebConf10 DPL report- Dear developers,
here is the promised DPL report from DebConf10. I post it not only as
the usual periodic report, but also to point at some DebConf10 events
which might be relevant for future project activities.
Communication
————-
I’ve delivered the classic “bits from DPL” talk [10] at DebConf. I won’t
discuss it here, but both slides [11] and recordings [10] are available.
[10] http://penta.debconf.org/dc10_schedule/events/569.en.html
[11] http://git.upsilon.cc/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=talks/201008-debconf10-dpl.git;a=blob_plain;f=dpl-bits.pdf;hb=pdf
I’ve also had two interviews with social science researchers (Gabriella
Coleman and Fernando) on several Debian/DPL-related topics. The texts
will be available, although it might take some time to write it down as
the interviews were tape recorded.
CUT (Constantly Usable Testing) BoF
———————————–
Before DebConf10 we had yet another discussion that stumbled upon Joey
Hess’ CUT proposal [6]. As I’m mean *g*, I started annoying^Wprodding
Joey to have a CUT BoF at DebConf10. He agreed and ended up organizing,
together with Lucas Nussbaum, one of the most crowded BoF of the
conference [7]. I’m personally quite excited about CUT, as it has the
potential to provide a quite unique in the context of today FOSS
distributions.
After the BoF, an Alioth project has been spawned [8] and discussions
are flourishing on its mailing list [9]. If you are interested check out
the archives or wait for a summary on -project which AFAIK is being
prepared these days.

RC squashing activities
———————–
I’ve hosted a BoF on RC bug squashing via NMUs [12]. While it is not
strictly DPL-ish, I mention it here because it gave to the participants
the clear impression that (properly done!) NMUs are welcome and
considered a very useful tool to release in a more “collaborative”
manner. Such a culture is important for the sustainability of our
release process and to help the release team, especially these days,
when we are close to the Squeeze release. Watch the video and go NMU an
RC bug fix
[12] http://penta.debconf.org/dc10_schedule/events/609.en.htm
Along the same lines, shortly before DebConf10 Micah Anderson contacted
me to organize some RC bug squashing activity during the conference. The
result of discussions with him, Gregor Hermann, and Mehdi Dogguy (in
fact, they did most of the work) has been RCBC [3,4] a Release Critical
Bug squashing Contest, with prize contributions from generous sponsors
such as Marvell, HP, and Pearson. RCBC stats are impressive, with more
than 200 bugs fixed in both Squeeze and Lenny. For more info see check
the wiki page and the closing DebConf10 plenary [5].

init system(s)
————–
When I attended the Ubuntu Development Summit (UDS) a few months ago, I
chatted with Scott James Remnant (Upstart upstream) about how to best
evaluate Upstart support in Debian. One of my suggestions has been to
have a BoF on the matter at DebConf, which he kindly volunteered to
organize [13]. The BoF has been attended by people as varies as upstream
authors, boot loader maintainers, policy team, etc.
While I’m by no mean an authoritative voice in wrapping up the BoF, I’m
quite excited at an idea which was quite popular during the BoF: instead
of *transitioning* from one init system to another, Debian can rather
show how to *support* multiple init systems. The first needed step to go
there will be support in policy for that and AFAIK it will be worked on
by the policy team in the near future; check the policy BTS for info.

Derivatives
———–
After my talk at UDS a few months ago, I invited Ubuntu folks to do the
same at our conferences. Jorge Castro—Ubuntu responsible of
collaboration with upstream—has kindly accepted and delivered an
interesting “Collaboration between Ubuntu and Debian” talk [18].
Additionally, Matt Zimmerman hosted a “Debian derivatives BoF” [19].
Unfortunately the BoF room didn’t have video coverage, but minutes have
(just) been posted to the -derivatives@lists.d.o mailing list.

Collaboration with SFLC
———————–
Being in New York I took the chance to meet in person some FOSS
sensitive entities which are in the area and care about Debian. In
particular, I’ve been talking a lot with Eben Moglen and other people
from SFLC (which, BTW, has contributed to the success of DebConf10, both
in terms of monetary sponsoring and in terms of events organized
for/with us) about collaboration possibilities.
During the question time of the “Patent Absurdity” video projection
[14], we have announced the start of collaboration in writing reports
that will help Debian, and other distribution like us, to better
understand and document legal implications of our day to day
activities. A proper collaboration announcement is being prepared and
will follow soon.

DebConf & Debian
—————-
Following some pre-DebConf10 discussions among myself and the DebConf
orga team on the topic of conference budget, a couple of BoFs have been
organized. In particular, Pablo Duboue has hosted one on the topic of
travel sponsorship [15], while myself and Holger Levsen have hosted one
on the long outstanding issue of the (formal) relationship between
DebConf and Debian [16]. Of course, no decision has been taken during
the BoFs, as not all interested parties could be assumed to be present.
On both subjects, discussions will re-start shortly on the debconf-team
mailing list, aiming at clarifying both aspects before the full “release
cycle” of DebConf11.

Wrap up
=======
The above pointers to DebConf10 events are by no means exhaustive, they
are only those somehow related to DPL activity. There is interesting
stuff for the Debian community in possibly any single DebConf10 event.
Thanks to the outstanding work of the video team, recordings of almost
all DebConf10 events are available [1]. In case you have missed a
specific event or the conference all together, I encourage you to check
out the recordings. In the same spirit, I encourage all speakers and
event organizers to provide slides, minutes, and other support material
as attachments in Penta [2] and to post them to the most relevant
mailing lists, so that they are more widely available.

Happy Squeeze hacking,
Cheers.

As a surprise present for most Debian contributors, Maintainers and
Developers, users were asked to submit their thanks via the website
thanks.debian.net [21], and birthday balloons pointing to that page
were added to several of Debian’s web services.
21 : http://thanks.debian.net
About 3000 submissions [22] were received, ranging from plain “Thanks”
in various forms, up toheartwarming [23] messages in (to most of us)
foreign languages [24]. We would like to thank all users for their
feedback, which really strengthened our project’s morale and
motivation! Thanks!

As an unrelated sidenote, the editor would also like to mention that
Debian’s bug submission tool [25]reportbug supports a –kudos option,
making it easy to submit thanks to package maintainers on the other 364
days of the year ;).

Screenshots at packages.debian.org
———————————-
As it is often easier to get an impression of an application by looking
at screenshots, instead of just reading a descriptive text, Gerfried
Fuchs has integrated the [26]screenshots.debian.net service into the
package information at [27]packages.debian.org. See for example the
screenshot of the package extremetuxracer [28].

For packages that do not yet have a screenshot available, a placeholder
image is shown. Users are encouraged to contribute by uploading their
own screenshots for their favourite applications.
Some bits from ARM porters
————————–
Riku Voipio published some “unofficial bits from the ARM porters [29]”
in which he thanked ARM and Canonical for sponsoring new machines for
the project. Besides giving Debian Contributors a three times faster
machine for their development work, it has allowed the buildd
infrastructure of machines automatically building new packages for
specific architectures and suites to be renewed, so that experimental
packages,volatile [30] packages, non-free packages and packages from
[31]backports.org are now automatically built as well. Finally, he
announced some work being done on a Hardfloat ARM port [32], which will
work better on newer ARM processors with a hardware floating-point
unit.

Join the DebConf Team
———————
Richard Darst started a series of blog posts about the organisation of
the annual Debian Conference [33] by commenting on the recent “DebConf
& Debian” discussion. He doesn’t see a difference between the two, and
invites all interested people to join the organisation team by
subscribing to theDebConf team mailing list [34] and joining the
#debconf-team IRC channel on irc.debian.org. In his second post [35],
he explained the timeline of a DebConf.

Progress of the Debian GNU/kFreeBSD port
—————————————-
Different aspects of the port of the Debian operating system to the
FreeBSD kernel [36] have made great progress recently. The Debian
installer has been upgraded [37] to the FreeBSD kernel version 8.1,
which also allows the installation system to be used in languages other
than English. Also the debian-cd [38] scripts used to create CD and DVD
images now support the creation of the new architectures [39]. Daily
build images for Debian unstable are already available; daily and
weekly builds for “Squeeze” will be made available with the next beta
release of the Debian installer. However, the Debian GNU/kFreeBSD
related web pages are outdated, and help is needed tofix the web and
wiki pages [40].

Bits from the MIA team
———————-
Jan Hauke Rahm sent some bits from the MIA team [41], which tries to
identify and handle package maintainers who sadly have become inactive.
He gave some advice on how package maintainers should react when they
think a package has been neglected by its maintainer, and stressed that
the work of the “MIA” team is an important aspect of quality assurance.

Release-critical bugs statistics for the upcoming release
———————————————————
According to the unofficial release-critical bug counter [44], the
upcoming release, Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” , is currently affected by 302
release-critical bugs. Ignoring bugs which are easily solved or on the
way to being solved, roughly speaking, about 128 release critical bugs
remain to be solved for the release to happen.

The Debian project Release Team announces an official Freeze
On 6 August at DebConf10 in New York City, Adam D. Barratt and the rest of the Debian Release Team announced that Debian is being frozen in preparation for release. The tentative release goal is before the end of the year. As Adam D. Barratt said, a freeze is a horizontal transition and it means that one doesn’t introduce new transitions, or upload packages to unstable which are not intended to be released in “Squeeze”. Also, if your package is involved in an ongoing transition, don’t upload a new version until it migrates. You can check the transition tracker for more information.
Annual Debian Developer Conference 2010 ended
The 2010 annual Debian Developer Conference, DebConf10, which was held at Columbia University in New York City, ended last Saturday on 7 August, 2010. With over 300 Debian Developers, Maintainers, and Users from 40 countries attending, it was one of the most productive conferences ever. Attendees met other developers, worked on projects, toured New York City, and attended talks, thus forming strong community bonds throughout the week long event.
Holding DebConf in New York allowed organizers to include members of the wider Free Software and Free Culture community who gave talks and presentations. Eben Moglen, chairman of the Software Freedom Law Center, gave a talk “The Silver Lining in the Cloud” (beta version of the recording) that inspired days of conversation and got many participants interested in the Freedom Box project. John Sullivan from the Free Software Foundation showed a film about patents, “Patent Absurdity” (beta version of the recording), and led a BOF detailing the many campaigns of the Free Software Foundation. We also enjoyed the award winning animated film released under a Creative Commons license “Sita Sings the Blues”. The filmmaker, Nina Paley, along with Karl Fogel from Questioncopyright, led a lively question and answer period after the film.
Many other interesting Debian-related talks and ad-hoc sessions took place, ranging from the latest developments in packaging up to collaboration with derivative distributions and projects like “Constantly Usable Testing”. Preceding the conference, a one week work camp took place, and thanks to the bug-squashing contest held during the past two weeks, almost 140 bugs were closed for the next release, and almost 80 for the current stable release!
Debian’s current DPL, Stefano Zacchiroli, gave an inspirational talk (beta version of the recording), explaining why Debian is still relevant after 17 years but also making recommendations for attracting more users and developers, and for building stronger collaboration with derivatives. The Release Team delivered a quick but concise talk about their status and announced the immediate freeze of “Squeeze”.
For those who couldn’t attend the conference, and would like to watch the talks, many sessions were streamed by the DebConf video team composed of over 40 volunteers. If you liked their work, please say thank you as this helps to keep them motivated.
A low quality beta version of the video recordings is already available.
The Debian Project, the attendees, and all who followed the streams would like to thank this year’s sponsors and the organizers for making all that possible!
A free (as in speech) Debian book in the making
Debian developers Raphaël Hertzog and Roland Mas have announced their intention to translate their French Debian book into English. Their best-seller covers a wide range of topics from the basics (introducing the community, dpkg, APT, debian-installer, etc.) to more advanced administration tasks (automated installation, virtualization with Xen, RAID/LVM, SELinux, etc.) as well as the most common services (mail, web, firewall, file server, LDAP, etc.). It will be based on the upcoming Debian “Squeeze”.
The resulting book will be published under a DFSG-compliant license (dual license: CC-BY-SA 3.0/GPL2+) provided that they manage to raise the money required to fund this work. At this point, they need your feedback to pick the most appropriate funding service: check their announcement and respond to the questionnaire that they have set up.
Second alpha version for “Squeeze”-based Debian Live images available
Daniel Baumann announced the availability of the second alpha version of Debian “Squeeze”-based live images, which can be used without being installed. Due to space limitations, dedicated USB-HDD images will most likely not be offered anymore, as the new ISO-hybrid images can be used on both optical media like DVDs and USB-sticks. It’s also possible to use them via network boot. The images are available for the amd64, i386, and powerpc architectures and also contain an experimental installation system.
Net-installation CD images with firmware available
During the last few weeks, “netinst” CD images (containing the installation system and all packages for the base system, downloading everything else from the Internet) have been available which also contain the partly non-free firmware files needed (e.g.) for some network and WLAN controllers. Now that they have been tested, they have been moved to their final location and can be downloaded from the official download site for the i386, amd64, and powerpc architectures as well as one image to boot all three architectures.
Debian Edu/Skolelinux 6.0.0 alpha0 test release
DebianEdu, who adapt Debian for the special needs of schools and similar institutions, released their first test version based uopn Debian “Squeeze”. Many applications have been updated and added, so testers are asked to take special care about the package selections: missing, unneeded, and untranslated applications should be reported back. Other newly introduced features are the integration of the LXDE desktop environment and a roaming workstation profile for laptops.
ZFS support in unstable on kFreeBSD ports
Thanks to Tuco Xyz, Petr Salinger and Aurelien Jarno, zfsutils are now packaged for Debian GNU/kFreeBSD and available in “Sid”, including the relevant libraries and a udeb package for the Debian Installer. Its availability also brought some kernel ZFS issues to light which have been fixed in the meantime. Now Debian GNU/kFreeBSD can fully support ZFS.
Debian-Accessibility is using Blends web sentinel
The Debian-Accessibility project is now using the web sentinel provided by the Debian Pure Blends effort to show their current work to users. Those who are interested might have a look at the
* user oriented tasks pages
* developer oriented bugs pages
There is some ongoing discussion whether Blends metapackages make sense for the Debian-Accessibility project.
The definition for the packages which are shown on the pages above is available in the Subversion repository and the documentation of the format of the tasks files is available in the Debian Pure Blends documentation.
Debian GIS project will release Blends metapackages in “Squeeze”
The Debian GIS project has now released a set of metapackages built using Debian Pure Blends tools which are available in testing (and thus will be released in “Squeeze”). The web sentinel provides an overview of the available GIS and OSM packages in Debian. It would be great if some OpenStreetMap addicts would join this effort.
As above, the definition for the packages shown is available in the Subversion repository.
DebiChem project will release Blends metapackages in “Squeeze”
The DebiChem project has likewise released a set of metapackages for “Squeeze” built using Debian Pure Blends tools. See the overview of chemical application packages in Debian and task definition in the Subversion repository.
DebConf11 logo contest
While Annual Debian Developers Conference 2010 has just ended, preparations for the 2011 conference have already begun. One example is the DebConf11 logo contest collecting ideas and logos for the conference, which will take place in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
When should services started by init.d scripts be operational?
Petter Reinholdtsen wondered whether a service started by an init.d script should already be operational when the script exits successfully. As the execution of these scripts is ordered based on their dependencies, it can lead to difficult to solve problems (see for example #585966 or #589915) when these scripts exit before their service is completely up and running. A depending service may be called while the service is still only starting up. Josselin Mouette noted that this would be the case for all init.d scripts using the start-stop-daemon with the –background option. Josef Spillner added that services should be able to handle it if services they depend on are temporarily unavailable, e.g. by trying to reconnect.
Different statistics about Debian
Anthony Towns published several statistics about Debian, including the average time needed to close bugs and the number of release-critical bugs. The graphs are rendered using JavaScript allowing different filters and zooming into the graphs.
Building all files from source
After several bugs had been filed against packages not building Flash files during their build process but shipping precompiled files, Charlie Smotherman wondered whether all files shipped in a Debian package really need to be built from source. Some of the reasons named were quality assurance, conforming with Debian Poliy, and compliance with the Debian Free Software Guidelines: being able to modify files distributed by Debian is a core principle.
Other news
The twenty-third issue of the miscellaneous news for developers has been released and covers the following topics:
* Debian MiniConfs
* Debian Maintainer index
* GoogleCode redirector
* Commit rights to Debian Project News for DDs
* Debian Developer Portfolio Service
* #debian-ubuntu on OFTC
* Team uploads
A list of the contents of all JAR files in Debian unstable is now generated daily. You can use zgrep to search package names, JAR filenames, or class names.
Martin Zobel-Helas announced the agenda for a meeting of Debian’s System Administrators to take place on 3 September in Munich, Germany.
Russell Coker documented how to create a chroot environment using SELinux.
Petter Reinholdtsen wondered whether tools used to create users and their home directories should use a common framework (e.g. scripts in /etc/skel.d/) to automatically fill these directories with configuration files.
New Developers and Maintainers
Six applicants have been accepted as Debian Maintainers since the previous issue of the Debian Project News. Please welcome Michael Ziegler, Josué Miguel Abarca Samayoa, Manuel A. Fernandez Montecelo, Tomasz Muras, Praveen Arimbrathodiyil, and Youhei SASAKI into our project!
Release-critical bugs statistics for the upcoming release
According to the unofficial release-critical bug counter, the upcoming release, Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”, is currently affected by 245 release-critical bugs. Ignoring bugs which are easily solved or on the way to being solved, roughly speaking, about 145 release-critical bugs remain to be solved for the release to happen.
There are also more detailed statistics as well as some hints on how to interpret these numbers.

Hello world,
here is a report on DPL whereabouts up to July 2010, just before
DebConf. It was meant to be sent before, but DebConf has been so intense
that I sat down writing it only now, apologies for the delay. I’ll
separately send a DebConf-related update. As usual, a more
detailed/boring activity log is available at master:/srv/leader/news/ .
Communication
=============
- I’ve been contacted about editing a Debian-related podcast [1];
planning of its episodes is now ongoing and some recordings have
already been done. If you’re interested in being interviewed about a
specific area of Debian, please sign up at [2].
- I’ve released an interview for the Italian linux magazine called
“Linux & C”. The magazine is a paper magazine, but I’ve made the
single interview available at [3] (PDF format, in Italian).
Various other aspects of communication about Debian have been discussed
with the press and publicity team, including the take over of
and the proposal of merging various blog-ish
resources into blog.debian.org. Check debian-publicity archives for more
details.

Derivatives
===========
- A press release about the derivatives front desk [4] has been
published (thanks to the press team for their help!). Activity on the
debian-derivatives mailing list is flourishing and some others derived
distros have joined the initiative (including gNewSense, which will be
switching to Debian in the near future).
- The forthcoming openSUSE conference [5] will be on the topic
“collaboration across borders”; they’ve asked me for a Debian
representative. Rhonda has recently been very active and helpful in
the derivatives from desk, and has kindly agreed to represent Debian
at the conference. Rhonda has asked for feedback on our collaboration
activities [6], please get in touch with her to contribute.
- A “Debian derivatives” BoF has been discussed on -derivatives and Matt
Zimmerman has kindly volunteered to organize it [7] (more about it in
the forthcoming report about DebConf10).

Delegations
===========
As promised, I’ve started reviewing current delegations with the goal of
having a complete overview of all delegations by the end of my term. To
start with, the delegations I’ve been given myself consistently have a
wiki.d.o/Teams/SubPage with a link to the delegation text. As a next
recent step, I’ve discussed with the current marketing delegates and
they agree with me that their delegation are no longer needed.
———————————————————————–
I hereby thank the marketing team for their past work and revoke the
previous delegations [8] from the marketing team delegates Moritz
Muehlenhoff and Andreas Schuldei.

———————————————————————–
Nevertheless, publicity and communication activities around Debian are
quite active these days; if you are interested in the topic I suggest
joining the -publicity mailing list and work with both the press team
and the wonderful spontaneous team which is emerging there.
Money
=====
Here are some brief highlights on how I’ve been using / promised to use
Debian money in the recent past:
- I’ve guaranteed to the DebConf team money coverage to fully sponsor
queue A and queue B attendees. The team was rightfully worried by the
budget situation of the conference (in spite of the hard work of the
sponsoring team, this year we have been less lucky than previous
editions). In the end, the budget situations is much better than
expected and probably no extra Debian money will be needed for
covering travel sponsoring. Shameless plug: thanks to the orga team
for the wonderful conference they have managed to organize!
- I’ve asked to transfer the Debian money which were held in trust by
Linux-aktivaattori (Finland) to FFIS (Germany). I’d like to thank
Tapio Lehtonen and Linux-aktivaattori for the work they’ve done thus
far holding in trust Debian money.
- I’ve finalized the “Debian Sponsoring Guidelines” [9] and published
them at [10]. (The attentive reader might have noticed announces of
forthcoming team meetings and agendas on some mailing lists already.)
- As the subject has been touched in recent discussions, I’d like to
reiterate that Debian money can be used to buy hardware for specific
needs, even if the hardware will be held in trust by individual
developers. Good examples are hardware that you need for porting
work, but you can be creative (as long as you are able to convince me
that the hardware is really needed).
- I’ve been contacting (thanks to Sune Vuorela and Michael Prokop)
people from the KDE e.V. board about their incredibly successful
sprint program [11]. I’m still fleshing out details (ATM we have
significantly less resources than them, so we have more constraints),
but I hope to be able to start something similar next fall. In the
meantime, start thinking whether your pet Debian team can benefit from
a sprint!

L’annuncio ufficiale:
Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” frozen
August 6th, 2010
In this very moment, during the ongoing annual Debian Developer Conference “Debconf10″ in New York, Debian’s release managers have announced a major step in the development cycle of the upcoming stable release Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”:
Debian “Squeeze” has now been frozen.
In consequence this means that no more new features will be added and all work will now be concentrated on polishing Debian “Squeeze” to achieve the quality Debian stable releases are known for.
The upcoming release will use Linux 2.6.32 as its default kernel in the installer and on all Linux architectures.
New features of the upcoming release include:
* State of the art desktop environments, based on KDE 4.4.5, Gnome 2.30.0, LXDE 0.5.0, XFCE 4.6.2, X.org 7.5, OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 and many other applications.
* Stable and current versions of common server software such as Apache 2.2.16, PHP 5.3.2, MySQL 5.1.48, PostgreSQL 8.4.4 and Samba 3.4.
* Modern interpreters and compilers for all common languages such as Python 2.6 and 3.1, Perl 5.10, GHC 6.12 and GCC 4.4.
* DKMS, a framework to generate Linux kernel modules whose sources do not reside in the Linux kernel source tree.
* Dependency-based ordering of init scripts using insserv, allowing parallel execution to shorten the time needed to boot the system.
Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” will also be accompied by variants based on the FreeBSD kernel for amd64 and i386 machines, together with the GNU libc and userland as a “technology preview”. Users of these versions however should be warned that the quality of these ports is still catching up with the outstanding high quality of our Linux ports, and that some advanced desktop features are not supported yet. However, the support of common server software is strong and extends the features of Linux-based Debian versions by the unique features known from the BSD world. This is the first time a Linux distribution has been extended to also allow use of a non-Linux kernel.
Further work
A number of bug squashing parties will be organized before the new distribution is released in order to classify and fix the remaining known problems in the new distribution. As the set of features has now been finalized for “Squeeze”, developers can now begin to create documentation such as release notes and the installation guide. Interested users and developers are invited to join the #debian-bugs IRC channel on irc.debian.org and help with these efforts or test out pre-release versions of “Squeeze”. To support more users, the Debian project also asks for help with translating the new documentation to as many languages as possible.
About Debian
The Debian Project was founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock to be a truly free, community project. Since then the project has grown to be one of the largest and most influential open source projects. Over three thousand volunteers from all over the world work together to create and maintain Debian software. Translated into over 30 languages, and supporting a huge range of computer types, Debian calls itself the “universal operating system”.

* '''Editor predefinito di sistema'''
<pre>
# update-alternatives --config editor
</pre>
<pre>
EDITOR=/percorso/editor
</pre>
al file <code>~/.bashrc</code> o al file <code>~/bash_profile</code> quindi:
<pre>
$ . .bashrc
</pre>
oppure:
<pre>
$ . .bash_profile
</pre>
<pre>
$ EDITOR=
</pre>
<pre>
$ editor
</pre>
<pre>
$ crontab -e
</pre>

+http://loganalyzer.adiscon.com/ .<br/>
+<pre>
+# groupadd adm
+# usermod -a -G adm www-data
+</pre>
+Verifichiamo quindi la buona riuscita dei comandi:
+<pre>
+groups www-data
+</pre>
+<pre>
+/var/log/syslog {
+ rotate 7
+ daily
+ compress
+ create 640 root adm
+ postrotate
+ /etc/init.d/syslog-ng reload >/dev/null
+ endscript
+}
+</pre>
+<pre>
+$CFG['DefaultSourceID'] = 'Source2';
+
+$CFG['Sources']['Source2']['ID'] = 'Source2';
+$CFG['Sources']['Source2']['Name'] = 'Auth Log Server';
+$CFG['Sources']['Source2']['ViewID'] = 'AUTHLOG';
+$CFG['Sources']['Source2']['SourceType'] = SOURCE_DISK;
+$CFG['Sources']['Source2']['LogLineType'] = 'auth.log';
+$CFG['Sources']['Source2']['DiskFile'] = '/var/log/auth.log';
+</pre>

+# Incollate l'URL precedentemente copiato nell'apposito campo Indirizzo.
